Roads

a child knows nothing
about the consequences
of the many roads
she will walk in life
until the end
when the last road is chosen
and for better or worse
she arrives at her destination

no more roads left to walk
she then ponders
those fearlessly taken
the ones passed by, unexplored
the hurtful ones
paved with nails and glass
and she realizes that long ago
she lost her way

too late now
she knows, too many times
she picked the wrong roads
always in a hurry
she veered left on a whim
right on a wish
and she has only herself to blame
for this damned dead end

Your poem invoked a strong response in this reader. I definitely didn’t like the ending. But the strength of my own response, tells me this is a damned good piece of writing.

Good to know that you find quality in my words. After doing this for so long, one can’t help wondering about how much has been lost in the process of following this path and worry about the reality of simply existing in some sort of weird echo chamber, chasing down the disappearing tail of a wild creature never meant to be caught. Speaking of dead ends, lol. Your poem stopped me cold in my tracks, had me thinking about so many things. And I can only thank you for that.

I’ve been doing “this” for quite a while as well, never able to strike a sustainable balance between my creative, personal, and professional life. Now that I’m retired, I just try to take each day as it comes and do whatever brings me pleasure in the moment. Im tired of chasing wild creatures.
And speaking of thinking, I do too much of it nowadays.

Thanks for this and keep sharing! It is so hard to watch our children suffer, even though we know it is their path and their growth, just as our darker paths have led to our own maturing.
